I have the same problem with my thinkpad t61 and 7.10 x86_64, which also has a recent nvidia gfx card, the QUADRO NVS 140M. However, this bug is fixed with the latest Hardy Heron snapshot I tried (alpha 3). I suggest you try Heron alpha 4 and see if the problem persists.

If this bug is not fixed by Hardy, it is very likely to be a dup of bug 147623

thanospc : Thanks for your answer. You say that you are using ubuntu 64bit and a nvidia card, can you type this in a terminal and copy the output in the bug report please?

lspci | grep VGA

Thanks for the information you provided so far.

In my opinion this is a duplicate of bug 147623.
A solution is described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/147623/comments/136.
Probably the newer version of libx86 should be backported to Gutsy.

This bug should stay closed except if required informations are provided. I also think that this is the popular bug 147623. To ask for a backport, you can open a new bug in libx86 asking for backport to Gutsy, perhaps that a lot of ubuntu users would be happy of that.
