Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I tried to install a Brother mfc8820DN network printer using the instructions on the Brother website. It failed with an error 127. And now when I try to use the update manager I get the message -E:The package mfc8820dlpr needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
I cannot use update-manager now. How do I fix this?

Thanks for your bugreport.

Can you please point me to the brother website so that I can try to reproduce the problem myself? You can fix your system with "sudo dpkg --remove --force-reinst-required mfc8820dlpr"

Thanks,
 Michael

Hi Michael Vogt,
Thank you for replying - I fixed the problem by re-installing Ubuntu
and don't want to have to do that all the time.
I'm an experienced computer user but a complete novice to Ubuntu and
Linux so I don't really know what I'm doing.
I'm trying to install a Brother mfc8820dn network printer driver,
which is already setup on a Windows home network and is accessible by
Windows and iMac pcs. The mfc8820dn is a network printer attached only
to the network and to no specific computer.
I received an email recently from Brother outlining their procedure
for installing the drivers but their procedures don't seem to work in
Ubuntu. At least not for me. I get many access denied messages and
must use sudo to get around them.
Here is the email:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
