During a run of Software Updater, got this error.

Ubuntu 20.04 fully patched once daily.

Linux kernel updated from 5.4 to 5.8 in this run of Software Updater.

VirtualBox was NOT a product being updated according to the list in Software Updater.

When asked to restart, the system took abnormally long to complete the task.

I have the same issue and was not able fix this by using the repo version of virtualbox on Ubuntu 20.04.

I found this guide on how to install the latest version of Virtualbox:

https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-install-virtualbox-on-ubuntu-20-04/

I tried it and it worked for me, now I have Virtualbox 6.1.16 version installed and Virtualbox works just fine. Not sure if this is the best solution but at least for now it works.

Best regard

I'm also seeing the same issue on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS after updates pulled in a 5.8 kernel as part of HWE. Kernel module build errors were returned during the update and indeed VirtualBox VMs fail to start when running the 5.8 kernel. If I instead boot from a 5.4 kernel (selected from the GRUB menu) I can still start VirtualBox VMs.

Switching to VirtualBox's upstream repo/packages is not preferred option for me. The last I checked, admittedly a few months ago, their upstream packages still depend on Python 2 whereas the VirtualBox packages in Ubuntu's repos depend on Python 3. Plus I've historically found VirtualBox's upstream repo servers intermittently unreliable, the typical cause of errors when updating my APT cache (e.g. "apt(-get) update").

I'm also affected.
Using 20.04. After kernel update to 5.8.0-36-generic, virtualbox got broken.

So 6.1.16 version bump of Virtualbox is a solution here.

Finally I remove linux-module (kernel) 5.8 and Go to the default LTS kernel
5.4.x

I also remove dkms module.
Now i have no problem found. All is running smoothly.

It seems that this update from LTS kernel 5.4 to 5.8 was a bug from ubuntu
main server.
Thanks all.

I have installed virtual box official repository (actual version 6.1.16), and now everything is ok with 5.8 kernel.

Yes, it works if you install 6.1.14+ by hand, but since 20.04 is an LTS release, this must be fixed by Ubuntu ASAP, actually both kernel and virtualbox package should have been released in pair - that way no one would be left locked out of their VM's.

Thank to all for the comments.
the problem ocures as well in guest-installation.
my host is ubuntu 20.04 LTS - i switched to Kernel 5.4 in grub.
one Guest is ubuntu 20.04 LTS - the autoupdate killed the virtualbox guest drivers / additions.

Just confirming that after running into this issue I purged virtualbox-6.1, added the repository, and installed 6.1.16 and was able to move forward. So #12 and #15 helped me get things working again. I agree with @stamster that it would be good to get 20.04 LTS bumped to virtualbox 6.1.16.
