Bug Description

Hi,

I just tried running the Hirsute Final image for Ubuntu Studio in a Virtual Box machine and it is not possible to select a language as stated in the Live Session Test Case.

Expected behaviour (as stated in the test case):
1. Boot Screen
2. Ubiquity - select language
3. Click Try Ubuntu

Actual behaviour:
1. Grub menu - I chose Ubuntu Studio (not clear it was for the live session - but the other options were definitely not).
2. Boots successfully into the Live Session, but everything is in English.

This is probably not the best experience for a non-English speaker to "try Ubuntu Studio".

Regards,

Ross

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1925221

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

If the aim is to eventually be able to set the language for the live session, then we should leave the Test Case as it is for now. Marking the Manual Test Case task as invalid.

I'm considering switching the installer back to Ubiquity on Studio for 21.10 and submitting some merge requests to make the Qt version of Ubiquity not hardcoded to Kubuntu, as is currently the case, which is the reason we went to Calamares in the first place. This will require introducing a config file, but I digress.

Basically, the mechanism is this: with Ubiquity, we'd be presented the Ubiquity Display Manager upon boot allowing one to "Test Ubuntu Studio" or "Install Ubuntu Studio" (without the live session). Calamares doesn't provide a DM, so it goes straight to the live session. This is also the case with Lubuntu.

Thanks for the explanation Erich. I struggle to keep up with the changes sometimes :-)
Setting the Importance to Wishlist for the calamares, as it is not a bug but an enhancement (to provide a DM) that we would be after.
I will add a task for ubuntustudio-meta to remember to make the switch one day.

The new flutter-based frontend to subiquity (ubuntu-desktop-installer) might prove to be the solution to this, so we're waiting for instructions on how to implement and customize it to our needs.

So, here's where we're at with this:

Ubiquity is back in Ubuntu Studio and we're using the GTK version as of 23.10 which, for ubuntustudio-meta, fixes this bug. However, for 24.04 LTS we will have to switch to subiquity with the flutter-based frontend as Ubuiquity must be sunsetted as Canonical cannot support it for another LTS along with subiquity.

As far as fixing in previous releases, it's not so much as "won't fix" as we can't fix. Therefore, I'm marking as such.
