Bug Description

Ubuntu Desktop Impish daily test on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)

Changing display positions in settings. I have two monitors, one above the other (so not the default).

I made change and it looked okay so I said keep. I noticed I was wrong having TOP/BOTTOM displays the wrong way (detected via mouse movements between displays) so I made another change of the TOP/BOTTOM displays in "DISPLAYS" of GNOME settings clicked apply again & keep...

** Expected Results

On changing display orientation I expect wallpaper to be redrawn, or remain on screen

** Actual Results

I now have BLUE background on both displays.

(this was soon changing.. but that didn't occur until I tried to change wallpapers...)

/var/crash is empty... operation appears normal; I lost background.
lots of TRAP messages though fill `dmesg`

I'm unable to change wallpaper now.

On selecting some they appear to flash on screen, then get replaced by a image... currently this firefox window appears on my other display with this "add comment" box frozen at the word "currently" last line when the image was changed...

Wallpaper on other image just re-freshed, now contains all of last paragraph... setting is on the 'clock' or change image..

No squashfs errors appear in `dmesg`.

As stated earlier.. operation of box appears unimpacted, however the 'firefox' image replacing the originally-blue background is a concentration-problem for me..

The other screen now appears to be updating regularly as I type, rather than time interval.. behavior appears somewhat inconsistent with background (no longer static).

Likely nouveau/nvidia issue; sorry I was unsure thus the incorrect `ubuntu-desktop`.

Yes this looks like a nouveau kernel driver bug. I recommend using the proprietary Nvidia driver instead, but it seems your GPU only supports driver version 340 and that's now too old to be supported in Ubuntu 21.10.

So to continue using the "nvidia quadro nvs 290" you should probably install Ubuntu 20.04 instead where it is still supported.

There isn't any supported stable graphics driver for "nvidia quadro nvs 290" after Ubuntu version 20.04. So if you can't replace the graphics card then I would recommend staying with Ubuntu 20.04.

Ubuntu Kernel Bot (ubuntu-kernel-bot) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1930945

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

bug was filed with `ubuntu-bug`.

any details achieved by re-running it on the box would only hurt, as the box has had 2x new installs done on it just today (focal) as it's used for QA-test installs. I'm changing status to Confirmed.

(I can if helpful, run an `apport-collect` when impish is re-installed on the box; but that'll likely be in about a week once 20.04.3 has been released and I return to impish testing)

For most case of nouveau issues, please test latest drm-tip kernel:

If the issue persist on drm-tip, then file an upstream bug here:

Getting bogged down in nouveau kernel bugs probably isn't helpful to testing 21.10. We know nouveau has frequent bugs and that we can't fix them, unless they're already fixed in drm-tip per comment #10.

If you would like to test 21.10 then I recommend changing the graphics card to one that is supported by current Nvidia proprietary drivers.

If you would like to just use the machine as-is then I would recommend staying on Ubuntu 20.04 which has a supported version of the Nvidia-340 driver for this card (providing you stick to kernel 5.4?).
