Bug Description

With a Hardy 64bit host (nvidia driver with TwinView enabled) and 32bit ubuntu desktop guests, full-screen mode does not work when the host and the guest have the same resolution (eg 1024x768). If the guest has a lower resolution, everything seems fine.

This is probably a limitation of the emulated "cirrus" driver on the guest. Upstream is planning to move to emulating a better chip eventually. Could you post a /var/log/Xorg.0.log from your guest?

Talking to Dustin, this is a limitation of the cirrus driver. To achieve this, need to use the vmware dirver. Marking "Won't Fix".
