Bug Description

If I choose nvidia driver, then the screen is black and I cannot log in. To log in, I need to delete all nvidia files.
After that, the xorg is selected and I can log in. But I cannot edit brightness. I can hardly see anything on the screen. The battery is draining very badly.

Thanks for the bug report. Please be careful to only report one problem per bug. You can open multiple bugs.

Let's make this bug about the black screen issue only. To debug that further we will need to see a system log from when the Nvidia driver was installed and you did NOT have "recovery nomodeset" kernel parameters.

Please run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot1.txt
  journalctl -b-2 > prevboot2.txt
  journalctl -b-3 > prevboot3.txt
  journalctl -b-4 > prevboot4.txt
  journalctl -b-5 > prevboot5.txt

and attach the resulting text files.

Friend I can't wait - I need to work. Therefore, I deleted Ubuntu 21. I put the version 20.04 (the problem was initially started on this version).
I have two versions.
5.8.0-59-generic - does not work.
5.8.0-43-generic - works fine.
5.8.0-59-Generic worked fine until I rebooted the computer. After that, the black screen is again.

OK but we still need the same information even if you are using 20.04 now. Please run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot1.txt
  journalctl -b-2 > prevboot2.txt
  journalctl -b-3 > prevboot3.txt
  journalctl -b-4 > prevboot4.txt
  journalctl -b-5 > prevboot5.txt

I did this in a previous comment. The prevboot.tar.xz file.

Yes, sorry, I can kind of see the issue happening with kernel 5.8.0-59.66~20.04.1-generic in prevboot3.txt. In case something related to the login screen has crashed, please look in /var/crash and tell us what you find.

It also appears you still don't have the Nvidia driver installed so please try to install that again with:

  sudo apt install nvidia-driver-430

because the Nvidia website seems to recommend stable driver version 430 for your card, or 465 if you need newer features.

Finally, your wifi driver 'rtw_8822be' (or wifi card) appears to be broken and the kernel is flooding the log with errors. I'm not sure if that's related to the main bug here though.

Is driver 465 working? If so then please collect a new log:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach it here.

If 465 is not working then please try 430.

Ideally please don't attach log files with "recovery nomodeset" because they're not relevant to the main issue here. Although in this case I can tell you now have Nvidia driver version 465 installed successfully so that's something.

Next please:

1. Edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the debug option:

     #Enable=true

   so it is:

     Enable=true

2. Reboot without recovery mode so you get a black screen.

3. Wait at least 10 seconds on the black screen.

4. Reboot with recovery mode.

5. Run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

6. Attach the resulting text file here.

No, I think that file is optional and ideally should not exist.

Thanks. I can't see anything that would explain a black screen in that log (assuming you did get a black screen). It looks like you switched to Nvidia driver 460 and it is working properly. Is it?

Does reverting to kernel 5.8.0-43 still work? If switching kernel versions helps then please also test:

 * One of https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-tip/

 * https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.12.14/

But this is better. I previously could not go through the recom mode, to enter I removed all the nvidia drivers. I can log in now.

Can I uninstall the nvidia driver and reinstall it? Choose 460?

The steps after this would require a little more expertise. They would involve bisecting the kernel history which is probably too complicated. Maybe the kernel team have some ideas for simpler suggestions than that, but otherwise I am out of ideas. You should probably just stick to a kernel version that works for you.

And no I would not recommend downgrading to Nvidia 460 when is working.

It is not in Nvidia driver cause i have internal intel gpu.
when i plug external monitor as secondary monitor - i see ubuntu banner and after login blindly i may do what i want on second screen but internal notebook monitor black.

kernel 5.11.0-22 and 5.11.0-25 have this problem as well.

for now i downgrade kernel to 5.8.0-55 and i'm waiting for bug fixes

I have the same issue with an HP EliteBook 840 G5, using an Intel Core i5-8250U (Intel UHD Graphics 620) and an AMD Radeon RX 540.

Under a clean Focal install (20.04.2), I can successfully boot and use my machine under kernel 5.8.0-55, but I get the blank screen described by other commenters under 5.8.0-59. `journalctl` and `inxi` output is available here: https://gist.github.com/myersjustinc/7a60811f846df88bab96b5207c4975f5

Under a clean Hirsute install (21.04), it similarly works under 5.11.0-18 and fails under 5.11.0-22. Corresponding output is available here: https://gist.github.com/myersjustinc/942f30176f65e774efd8d2f7886f4c53

Noting here that the fix for 1936708 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hirsute/+source/linux/+bug/1936708) also resolves this problem for me. (Granted, that seems to be in the works only for 5.11.x on Hirsute, and not 5.8.x on Focal, but I figure it's worth flagging for others affected.) Not sure when they'll put the finishing touches on that kernel release, but it's one to look forward to.
