Bug Description

Binary package hint: i8kutils

i8k is a collection of utilities to control Dell Inspiron and Latitude laptops. It includes programs to turn the fan on and off, to read fan
status, CPU temperature, BIOS version and to handle the volume buttons and Fn-keys.

The package includes also a small Tk applet, designed to be swallowed in the gnome panel, which monitors the CPU temperature and controls automatically the fans accordingly to user defined thresholds.

When running i8kmon I get 'can't open /proc/i8k: No such file or directory'
When running i8kfan I get the same message.

The logfile created by i8kmon is attached.

output of cat /etc/lsb-release:
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"

output of $sudo i8kfan -v
i8kctl v1.5 10/11/2001

Synaptic tells me that I have installed version 1.27.

When I ran the commands I was expected to get some information about my fan and other stuff, instead I get the bug report.

A quick fix for this is to do:

sudo modprobe i8k

I also believe you can add it to /etc/modules to avoid running it every time.

I just set up a new Xubuntu install on my notebook and noticed this same issue today, although I don't remember needing to add that module before on my Ubuntu setup (both installs are Gutsy) on this machine. Perhaps something just recently broke this.

Jupp, that fixed it. But on websites I have read that this could make
the system freeze. Mine didn't.
I'll add it to the /etc/modules

I think I will change the bug to i8kutils does not get added to modprobe
or something like that.

'Cos when I add it to /etc/mod... i8kutils works...

On my Dell Inspiron 1300, Ubuntu 7.10, I get the following when trying to modprobe i8k:
FATAL: Error inserting i8k (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko): No such device
dmesg reveals nothing.
Anyone have any ideas?

The same in Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty). I need to load i8k module if I want it to work.

"sudo modprobe i8k force=1" works in Lucid 10.04 LTS.

"ik8utils" is not meant to create "/proc/i8k". This file is created when the module "i8k" is loaded into kernel. "sudo modprobe i8k" works in 12.04 LTS, in Dell Inspiron 15R SE-4670.

Changed in i8kutils (Ubuntu):
status: Confirmed → Invalid

affects: i8kutils (Ubuntu) → i8kutils

Thanks! In my Dell XPS 14z I had to run "sudo modprobe i8k force=1" to fix i8kutils installation.
