Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I'm running Gutsy on an Acer Aspire 7720G laptop. The Alps touchpad is using xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 0.14.6-0ubuntu10

When using the 4-way scroll button the following occurs.

Up - Scrolls down (Unless its been broken by previously pressing Right or Down)
Left - Same effect as mouse middle click.

Right and Down seem to have identical results. They randomly vary from the following list

1) Mouse pointer moves a large (but not consistent) amount in a random direction
2) Simultaneous right click and crash (whole OS freezes and does not respond to CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE)
3) Pressing up stops doing anything
4) Mouse middle click

EDIT: I just tried Hardy Heron Alpha 5. With a little messing about, I was able to get my touchpad working
Up/Down were reversed but that was easy to change with xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 5 4 6 7 8 9"
xmodmap had no effect when used under Gutsy.

Forgot to mention in case its relevant.

I do not use a mouse on this laptop although cat /proc/bus/input/devices reports a PS/2 Mouse in addition to my touchpad.

Maybe thats normal. I don't know.

In order for buttons to start working properly a kernel patch is required. By default up/down/left/right buttons will generate down/up/middle/none events.
Touchpad exterior photo is posted here: http://myrtg.blogspot.com/2008/06/aspire-5520-alps-touchpad-joystick.html

Removed ALPS_FW_BK_3 as neither Dell Vostro 1440 nor Fujitsu-Siemens S6010 have left/right buttons on their 2-way joystick.

Looks like GNOME in Intrepid got top/down/left buttons working somehow but as 'right' direction does not generate any button event this support cannot be considered as a complete one.

Hi kev-elliskingdom,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 194403

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

The bug still exists both in 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP and upstream 2.6.30.1.

The code from http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19242824/alps-aspire5220-take2.patch is missing, so the button still produce incorrect events.

I can confirm bug still exists in vanilla 2.6.30.4 kernel (using Archlinux). Mr. Roman Yepishev's patch solves issue (horizontal scrolling) for my Acer Aspire 5520.

But not sure how this patch will affect Dell Vostro 1400 with the same { 0x73, 0x02, 0x50 } signature. Can anyone with Vostro 1400 comment on this?

According to this image - http://www.rozetka.com.ua/data/products/big/img06172.jpg Dell Vostro does not have any extra buttons. I have several Dell Vostro 1500 around here and they don't have up/down/left/right buttons as well.
