Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Totem skips a few times near the beginning of the song while playing the visualization. During this time, one of my cpu cores alternates between 100% and < 10% utilization. At first the visualization doesn't show up and all I can see is black. After about 10-30 seconds, it finally shows up and the audio is normally smooth from that point on.

I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy, amd64

libgstreamer0.10-0 is at version: 0.10.14-1ubuntu3
totem-gstreamer is at version: 2.20.0-0ubuntu3

I captured a totem log using 'GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 GST_DEBUG=*:2 totem' which I'm attaching

Though it consists mostly of lines like this:

0:00:11.213903000 18556 0x2aaab0002bc0 WARN goom gstgoom.c:491:gst_goom_chain:<vis_element> QoS: skip ts: 0:00:01.249523809, earliest: 0:00:05.464807255

Marking as incomplete until the following is tried:

Increase cache/buffer size in totem. I assume that goom is the only visulization that this behavior happens. I assume that you have sufficient RAM and swap. Does this occur after fresh bootup? Perhaps RAM is full and swap is happening during playback, that would affect performance.

Monitor your free RAM in another terminal:

>free

Observe what is happening in RAM while playing totem with different visualizations.

Marking as Confirmed. With a dual processor, the goom visualization and the music playing should happen without glitches. I presume the skip ts errors are time skip errors due to processing or I/O lag. With 2 processors, this should not happen.

I get skips every 6 seconds on a Dual Core Pentium D 2.94 GHz with Totem 2.20.0 on gutsy.

Perhaps totem visualization is not threaded to use multiprocessor.

Of course, I have to actually remember to mark it as Confirmed.

I am no longer experiencing this problem. I think the release of hardy
must have fixed it for me.
