Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-desktop

Sorry if the package is wrong. Best guess!

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"

Note: I am using Kubuntu.

I upgraded on 22 February 2008 to KDE 3.5.9 from 3.5.8.
Since the upgrade my plugin usb stick 2gb memory is invisible to KDE.

Prior to the upgrade, I inserted the stick and soon after I got a window asking me what to do with it.
I do not get this anymore.

Prior to the upgrade, I saw an icon on the desktop for the usb device.
I do not get that.

I did get 'once' since the upgrade two icons (at once!) on my taskbar which displayed the usb stick .
A right-click on the taskbar icons got me a popup > Media + Configure.
I have got nothing since.

/media reports nothing about the stick.
fdisk -l shows the device as /dev/sda1.
It does mount.

I went into System Settings - Desktop - Behaviour and the removable drive check boxes are marked.

I wonder what could have changed to cause this issue for you. I just tested this on 3 of my Kubuntu Hardy desktops here and none of them had this issue. Can anyone else running Gutsy confirm this? I will ask on IRC. I will attach an image showing it working in hardy. Thanks!

Thank You for the quick reply.

Further info:

When in a normal user session, I plug in the SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2gb stick, nothing visibly happens.
I logout/login as the same user and two usb icons appear in the taskbar - see attached graphic.
I restart the machine as the same user and the two same usb icons are visible.
I right click one of the icons and click 'Configure . . .' and I click 'Defaults.'
Now a floppy disk icon appears in the taskbar - see attached graphic.
I unplug the usb stick and the two usb icons disappear but not the floppy disk icon.
I plug the usb stick back in and nothing happens on multiple repeats except a visible floppy disk icon.

A strange thing happened (another strange thing?) a 2.0gb Removable Drive icon appeared on my desktop and I do not know how it happened. Just once. It has disappeared. I will pay more attention and report back when/if it happens again.

Anything else that I have missed, a log file maybe?

I have one question. What is normal after this upgrade? Should I still get the desktop icon? or should I now see the result in the taskbar?

Good and Bad News Ladies and Gentleman . . .

Good News: Solved - two usb icons in taskbar.

I checked the taskbar properties and applets. Two instances of 'Storage Media' were reported in the installed applet menu. I have used computers far too long to add two instances of anything but it is still possible. I have never installed either of these before. I removed the two instances and the two usb icons do not appear.

The reason that I showed only one floppy disk is because I configured only one usb icon as 'Default.' It is strange that when I configure one usb icon that it does not show in the second unless it is only updated on restart. Strange! I thought that apply would have been normal.

Bad News: Unsolved - usb desktop icon - still a no show.
