Bug Description

Binary package hint: libao2

Environment
--
$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"

Libao version: 0.8.8-2

Notes
--
The Libao man page states for 'default_driver' options:

"The "alsa" driver is for the 0.9.x ALSA API, whereas the "alsa05" driver is for the 0.5.x API."

Expected Behavior
--
`cat /etc/libao.conf` to contain a valid "default_driver" name that is available in the Libao man page.

Actual Behavior
--
`cat /etc/libao.conf` contains 'default_driver=alsa09', which is not listed in the man page. Only 'alsa' and 'alsa05' are listed as available ALSA drivers.

The man page provides conflicting driver names for versions of Alsa. This can provide particularly useful information to users looking for temporary workaround to Bug 55973 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/arts/+bug/55973) in arts. Though the bug is filed as an Arts bug, it affects many audio applications include mpg321/123, ogg123, Gaim, and likely others.

The man page is correct; the system-wide conffile was not. That has been corrected.

On the other hand, the man page still fails to document the preferred mechanism in Ubuntu, which is default_driver=pulse.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running on a terminal:
apport-collect 195123
and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
For the time being I'm closing the bug report, the release 7.10 is not supported since 18 April 2009.
