Nautilus does not update trashcan icon

Bug Description

smoku@wing:~$ nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 2.21.91

smoku@wing:~$ dpkg -l nautilus
ii nautilus 1:2.21.91-0ubuntu3

When I drag files to the Trashcan on the desktop, the Trashcan icon does not show that the files are there. If I open the Trashcan it shows deleted files.
If I logout and login again, the icon shows that files are in the Trashcan.
If I select "Empty trashcan" from the icon context menu, the icon still shows full Trashcan. If I open the Trashcan it shows empty.
If I logout and login again I see an empty Trashcan icon on the desktop.
I can now repeat the whole procedure. ;-)

#72468 is about trash panel applet. IIRC this is already fixed in upstream.

This #195266 is about desktop tras icon.

I'm confirming this issue with Hardy Heron up to date.

Cheers!

I found a temporal solution:

1. Add the trash applet to my panel
2. Remove it from the panel

Then, my trash started to work without problems (graphical status/rubbish updated)

Strange solution but it seems to work...

Cheers!

This bugreport is about desktop trash icon, not the panel applet.

Thank you for your bug report. Could you try if that's still an issue using the current versions? Does it happen every time? Could you describe easy steps to trigger the bug? Do you use local disks only there?

On my installation (Hardy Final, up to date as of date of this comment (May 4th, 2008), this bug is either not fixed or has regressed and the trash applet fails exactly as stated above for me, including the fix of adding a new trash applet and removing the old one fixing the problem.

Erik,

Can you try under a new user to see if it is a bug in your GNOME config or not?

Yes, I have just tried that, and discovered that:

The new user trash icon behaves in exactly the same buggy way, that
is, it doesn't update with adding stuff to an empty trashcan nor
emptying it, although opening it does show the items in there.

Stranger, when I logged back out and back into my old account, the
trashcan icon had completely disappeared! However, it is still
"there", it just isn't visible, since right-clicking on it does open
up a trashcan context menu.

Sometimes, display things are compiz related. I tried turning off and
on compiz but that doesn't change anything.

Here to say that this issue is happening on my hardy up-to-date install as stated at the beginning
(visual feedback on the desktop icon is delayed until next login).
me@mylappy:~$ nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 2.22.2
me@mylappy:~$ dpkg -l nautilus
nautilus 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu6

I thought a fix was released?...

I don't know what happened, but the trash icon issue seemed to be fixed about a month or so ago.
Now, I am sad to say that the problem is showing its ugly head again.
I wish I knew what specific update brought back the issue, but I am afraid I cannot recall...
Thanks for trying anyways... Hopefully a proper fix will come out for this regression.

Sorry for double posting, but I just noticed that the status of this bug report is "Fix Released".
That particular fix no longer works. Somebody, please re-open this bug as the issue is STILL current under up-to-date hardy.

I'm on Hardy, which was freshly installed, fully updated (including proposed updates). I have nautilus, version 2.22.3 and this happens for me, so I'm confirming this bug. As a "non-related" sidenote (:P) the trash-can applet also has this behavior, which is at version 2.22.2.

Desktop trashcan was operating normally in Hardy Heron (latest updates installed) until about a week ago. Starting behaving as noted above, after an update cycle ( cannot remember exactly what updates were installed that initiated the problem behavior).

Behavior continues today. Desktop trashcan never shows contents, but opening it, will display the contents.
