Bug Description

I have no sound (either with totem or with the flash player in firefox : File name: libflashplayer.so - Shockwave Flash 9.0r115).

All is at the maximum level either in alsa-mixer and gnome-volume-control on every devices (oss and alsa).
:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04

:~$ lspci
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Latest bios :

:~$ lshal |grep bios
  smbios.bios.release_date = '01/21/2008' (string)
  smbios.bios.vendor = 'LENOVO' (string)
  smbios.bios.version = '7LETB0WW (2.10 )' (string)
  smbios.chassis.manufacturer = 'LENOVO' (string)
  smbios.chassis.type = 'Notebook' (string)
  smbios.system.manufacturer = 'LENOVO' (string)
  smbios.system.product = '7663B14' (string)

updated freshly (just before reporting):

:~$ dpkg -s alsa-base
Package: alsa-base
Status: install ok installed
Version: 1.0.16-0ubuntu2

:~$ dpkg -s alsa-utils
Package: alsa-utils
Status: install ok installed
Architecture: i386
Version: 1.0.15-3ubuntu1

:~$ dpkg -s linux-sound-base
Package: linux-sound-base
Status: install ok installed
Architecture: all
Version: 1.0.16-0ubuntu2

Previously (when exactly, I can't say) the sound worked but was very low (compared to XP), I had to push the volume to max (either master and pcm) to get correct but low sound (was the same with gutsy).

From your information, sound module seems to be loaded and functioning (if I did not overlook anything). Maybe this is related to Bug #184167

I was affected, at least under gutsy by the "mic instead master" controlling output.
I have rebooted the laptop, tried to unmute under windows xp the sound (the sound works correctly so it's not hardware related).
I thought that there might be a control used by XP but not by alsa and that the fact that my sound was muted under XP might mute the sound also for alsa but it was a false guess (it might have been something like a volume control stored at a very low level).

So I don't have more ideas.

Sorry, a switch was off (there is a switch called "speaker" wich is different of the global mute/unmute switch)
All my apologizes and sorry for the annoyance.
Best and sorry again,
