Bug Description

When using the dialog window titled "Select contacts from Address Book" to
search the MS Exchange Global Address List (GAL), subsequent queries are
extremely slow. There are two problems here.

The first problem is that subsequent queries in the Contact tab of evolution
against the MS Exchange GAL are very responsive after the first query. It
appears that some sort of caching is being used to optimize subsequent queries.
However, the dialog window for selecting contacts does not appear to make use
of this same caching mechanism.

The second problem is that while the query is being executed, there is no
indication of activity, leading the user to believe the application is not doing
anything at all. Perhaps a status bar on this dialog window would be
appropriate, or at least a spinner on the mouse icon.

Ah, the version of evolution is 2.2.1.1 from the primary Ubuntu apt repository.
The exchange server is 2003 and is being queried over a local http connection.

This seems to be an upstream issue. Since I cannot reproduce this (I don't have
access to an exchange server), would you mind report it upstream ?

Just copy/paste this bug and put a link to it must be enough, IMHO.

Thank you for your report.

Thank you for the report.

Can this bug be recreated on the current version of Evolution in Dapper? Please provide us with steps to do so. Also, please provide a debug backtrace of the crash if possible.

If this bug is not a problem anymore, please let us know so we can close the bug.

Thanks again!

Dan, as Carthik suggested a month ago, you could try this on a newer evolution. If it is still present, then we should open it upstream, as this is not a ubuntu issue, ok?

Actually, this bug is upstream and very active. As it turns out, someone else has noticed this problem and is able to reproduce it and provide a healthy chunk of feedback (the person is using gkrellm to relate network statistics).

The reason I have continued to watch this bug so closely (even though I simply cannot gain access to an exchange server any longer) is because in my experience as an ubuntu advocate, one of the major complaints was that Evolution was not providing the same performance as Outlook (people are obsessed with the GAL in corporate america). I recognize this as a very crucial aspect of migration.

So that you may better understand the issue, there are one of two problems going on here. Either the communication with the Exchange XML endpoint is staling, or the requests are queuing up in the connector code to the point of deadlock.

Now, from the standpoint of certification of this distro, it would seem to me that someone, somewhere can help get a test server going so that we can actually give this thing a try. If I had somewhere to point, I would be testing it tonight.

I am using Evolution 2.22.1 from final Hardy release. I am using Evolution to connect to my company's exchange server (over an internet connection). Everything seems to be working fine (stability is not at its best).

The one issue is with contacts, I can't search for them and they don't auto-complete when typing in names on a new message's "to" field. Generally speaking, I have found no way to see my company's contacts.

I played around a lot with the Global Address List server name field trying a lot of options I found in posts on the net. None of them worked (BTW: leaving it empty spiked my CPU hard, but I read that's documented somewhere already).

Does Evolution rely only on the GAL server for contacts, can't it grab them from the OWA? If the GAL is my company's DC then there is no way I can connect to it over the internet (and I doubt there is any company which opens its DC to the net).
