Yaru color themes make GTK 2.0 apps unreadable white

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

lock screen, hard to see password box as it's gray.

I'll add a confirm; I use `hexchat` for IRC & my play had the tabs suddenly have a white background.

(as per lotuspsychje's pic; except my tabs are vertical on the left rather than horizontal at the bottom)

Can we say it's a general issue for GTK2 apps?

Yes, it's an issue for all gtk-2.0 apps. I've submitted a pull request here:
