Shutdown from XFCE Quit menu does not shut down the machine

Bug #196816 reported by Ryan

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
xfce4-session (Ubuntu)
Fix Released
Undecided

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop

xubuntu daily-live 2-23 as install media, updated to 2-28.

When I select XFCE Menu ~> Quit ~> Shutdown, the currently logged in user is logged out and returned to the login screen, at which point the user can shutdown the machine via the Shutdown button.

Expected behavior:
Quit ~> Shutdown should log out the user and shut down the machine.

I can confirm this. Running Hardy Beta on amd64.

I am also seeing this on Xubuntu Hardy 8.04 beta. xsession-errors:
** Message: xfsm-shutdown-helper.c:229: Using HAL to shutdown/reboot the computer.
** (x-session-manager:7608): WARNING **: Failed to perform shutdown action!

Further testing has revealed that it affects shutdown and restart. But in my case it only occurs if there is an inbound ssh session active when the action is attempted. If the ssh session is closed first then shutdown/restart works correctly. Other reporters please verify.

Do you mean an ssh session to another computer or another computer sshing into the computer running Xfce4?

Inbound = ssh session initiated from another PC (client) connecting to the Xubuntu PC (ssh server).

I can confirm this bug as well on Xubuntu Hardy 8.04, I also get the same errors in xsession-errors. It does not appear to be related to open ssh sessions for me.

By any chance are all of you using KDM as your login manager? I'm thinking the shutdown only works when GDM is your login manager.

Try this to set it to GDM and see if you're affected still:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

It was occurring with GDM and SLiM IIRC. I have been unable to reproduce this issue with hardy+1.

I can reproduce the ssh-related shutdown problem with the latest Hardy Heron. With Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2 it affects both XFCE and Gnome. I think it's a different issue with gdm so I filed bug #251337.

I'm unable to reproduce this bug even with a lot of programs still open, including rtorrent. Probably an apmd service error?

I had not seen this issue for awhile with hardy, but I just had to reboot my laptop after ~45 days up and this occurred. I went to the XFCE quit menu, selected restart and the system took me back to the GDM login screen instead of restarting.

Re: aimpau
APMd isn't running on my machine.

Have this issue on hardy 8.04.2 updated.

Also bios is old and I use acpi=force kernel option, if this helps.

@crypt
Are you getting the login screen when you try to shut down or does the system go through the normal shutdown sequence but not turn off? The acpi kernel option should only affect power-off, not the shutdown sequence (which is what this bug is about).

Everything like Ryan described. Probably, kernel option isn't related.

Mine works now for some reason; as I remember, it was something retarded
I changed in a gui config somewhere. I will check on my laptop when I
get home, but I remember hitting myself when I got it done. Doh!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Could test the current Ubuntu development version? It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 196816.

Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx. It won't be fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the requirements for backporting. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports for more information.
