Bug Description

Hello,
I've got an GeForce2 MX/MX 400 with nvidia drivers installed. When I install xserver-xgl (in order to run compiz-fusion), gnome fails to load setting (aka. something went wrong [blabla]).

This is on a Hardy Heron machine.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

OK. I've got 4 files for you:
1 (xorg.conf): This is my xorg.conf with closed source Nvidia-drivers.
2 (Xorg.0.log_without_xgl): This is the log with closed source Nvidia-drivers and without XGL.
3 (Xorg.0.log_with_xgl): This the log with closed source Nvidia-driver and with XGL.
4 (Xorg.0.log_without_xorg.conf): This is the log without xorg.conf, so I guess, open source Nvidia-drivers, and without XGL installed.

I hope this is enough.

I can confirm this bug.

Running Hardy, gnome-settings-daemon fails to start if xserver-xgl is installed.

I attach a screenshot. As a result everything looks ugly, and configuration (e.g. autostart) is not applied. I also experience keyboard problems (using Hungarian layout, the modifier AltGr (right alt) is ignored, can not type a pipe as a result).

I can also confirm this. I'm using an ATI Radeon Mobility X700.
I think this problem could be related to this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/199960
although this doesn't have a solution other than uninstalling xserver-xgl, it might provide some extra background. People are reporting that this lets them run Compiz as well as fixing the error, but mine will not run Compiz, and it looks like thats the case with other people on this bug.

Confirmed with nvidia-glx-legacy driver and [GeForce2 GTS/Pro.

Compiz won't run on my system without xserver-xgl.

This worked fine with a hardy version from a few weeks ago.

I applied maintenance today and no longer see the problem. I believe it was fixed with
gnome-desktop (1:2.22.1-0ubuntu5) release some hours ago. That patch is related to
bug 199960 which also relates to gnome-settings-daemon not starting.

Well done.
