Bug Description

w_scan is an application that greatly simplifies the task of scanning for DVB-T and DVB-C channel information. Winfried Köhler’s w_scan is special because it does not require any region-specific initial transponder data for operation. It will create configuration files for VDR and Kaffeine.

Do you know what license this is released under? I couldn't find anything in the source about it, just that it was copyrighted, not what the terms where though.

I have not find license information on the page or in package,
but Gentoo consider this as GPL-ed - see http://gentoo-portage.com/media-tv/w_scan
It seems that it should be GPL-ed because it uses GPL-ed code from
linuxtv-dvb-apps which is GPL-ed

For this to be even considered for packaging we need to have the developers add a COPYRIGHT file or explicitly state what the terms are. We can not just assume based on others' actions.

Talking with the developers is the best course of action.

I understand.
Unfortunately I cannot find any contact to w_scan author.

Since the required info is not available at this moment, I am marking this "Incomplete"

Feel free to set to "Confirmed" if/when you (or anyone) are able to produce the information.

I guess that somebody found the needed info because this now has "Fix released" in debian.
Should this be merged into Ubuntu?

Well actually it was closed in debian due to no activity. Click the link to debian

On http://wirbel.htpc-forum.de/w_scan/index2.html
new release of w_scan was released and this version already
has licence information: http://wirbel.htpc-forum.de/w_scan/index2.html

Because it is GPL, it can be packaged in Ubuntu now IMO.

Since this has still not yet been packaged into Ubuntu, we should instead use the latest snapshot (released today)

http://wirbel.htpc-forum.de/w_scan/w_scan-20080815.tar.bz2

The difference between the 20080815 snapshot against the 20080720 snapshot is added ATSC/QAM Annex-B support, for North America and Korea. I added this capability this week and Winfried integrated the changes into w_scan and released them today.

For the record, the only difference between the 20080720 snapshot against the 20080105 snapshot is the added GPLv2 license.

As w_scan is already included in debian, should have we synced it to intrepid?

I don't see it in debian, can you provide a link?

Oh sorry, I didn't check the package. I have only interpreted "Fix released" of this bug in Debian.
By the way, what does "Fix released" mean if the package isn't available?

It means it was closed due to inactivity. That is one of the examples where differing bug systems having differing definitions of bug statuses bits us.
