No gstreamer easy codec install for embedded video

Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

The 'Watch' link on any BBC News page pops up a viewer window that never shows any video.

I'm reporting this because it makes Ubuntu look stupid since none of the videos on the 'Latest Headlines' Live Bookmark will play.

No error message is given, nor is the user prompted to download codecs. There is no status / progress indication whatsoever. It simply "doesn't work"

This is tested with the Live CD of Hardy alpha 6 in VirtualBox

gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad provides MMS access support
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly provides ASF demuxer support
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg provides WMV and WMA support

With these 3 packages, BBC News streams play just fine.

Totem searches for codecs successfully, so why not Firefox?

I've not tested this, I'm sort of surprised that https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EasyCodecInstallation is not implemented for embedded totem. maybe this bug should be moved to the totem package.

I found this bug too. The Totem firefox plugin does not have the easy codec installation feature that seems to be working for standalone Totem. It is possible to get the BBC embedded videos to play if you choose Open with "Movie Player" from the embedded totem's menu, then try to play the video in standalone Totem, which will install the codecs for you, you can then go back to the BBC site and reload the page and the videos will play fine embedded.

As I remember, EasyCodec support was removed from the plugin because gnome devs thought it was too intrusive ?

Can't find the bugs.gnome.org issue.
