Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

In the Hardy Beta with latest updates as of 4/7, the Firefox default home page is not localized when system language is set to other than English. Default start page remains in English.

For each language, I installed language-support-XX, language-pack-XX and language-pack-gnome-XX for each additional language I wanted to install. I then switched languages (tested Spanish and French) in System -> Administration -> Language Support and rebooted. I launched Firefox and noticed the default home page remained in English.

This may be a problem with the interaction between ubuntu-docs and mozilla-firefox-locale-all so I'm opening a task on those packages.

The way this has been handled since dapper is set out here:

I can confirm this bug with the Catalan locale (ca_ES.UTF-8), running an up-to-date Alpha 6 installation. While the rest of the desktop applications appear translated, Firefox appears in English (although it has an upstream translation).

I haven't changed the bug status to "Confirmed" yet, as I was not sure for which one of the affected packages it was appropriate.

I think the most likely culpable package is mozilla-firefox-locale-all, so I'll set that to confirmed until we have a better diagnosis.

I've got the same problem. But I'm also seeing language code page problems with QT apps like LyX. All the menus are unicode garbage characters. I'm using tonight's hardy daily build alternate installer.

I'll submit a hardware profile on this AMD dual core box in case that's relevant, but I doubt it.

Lesson here. It's not just firefox. QT apps are worse.

Corin - your problem with QT apps is likely to be a separate bug.

I see that with epiphany the startpages are translated and the behaviour is as expected. Therefore, this seems unlikely to be a bug in ubuntu-docs, and rather more likely to be a bug in firefox or mozilla-firefox-locales-all.

Looking this over briefly on a system with multiple locales installed:
$ ls -l /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 2008-02-11 10:20 /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html -> /etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage

$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 2008-03-29 13:01 /etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage -> /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html

$ update-alternatives --list firefox-homepage
/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/firefox-index.html

The problem is that no other alternatives are being registered.

Looking at where one of these index files should be coming from, its in ubuntu-docs or similar:
$ apt-file search index-es.html
edubuntu-artwork: /usr/share/edubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-es.html
kubuntu-docs: /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-kubuntu/index-es.html
kubuntu-docs: /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-kubuntu/kindex-es.html
ubuntu-docs: /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu/index-es.html
xubuntu-docs: /usr/share/xubuntu-docs/about/locales/index-es.html

I would expect that ubuntu-docs should be registering all of the alternatives in its postinst or similar.

Looking in ephinany-browser, the reason it is coming up correctly is because it's initial page is set to

file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-%l.html

Firefox doesn't support setting this as a homepage, which is probably why the alternatives system is used in the first place.

You're right, the ubuntu-docs postinst is here: http://tinyurl.com/52sybh

Do you think it isn't working properly? It's been the same since Ian
Jackson wrote it in Dapper, and has always worked in the past.

Okay I just compared with a gutsy VM. Things are the same regarding ubuntu-docs in Gutsy. Only one alternative listed. It instead appears that when you set say a spanish (mexico) locale, that you end up with the homepage in firefox specifically set to file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales/index-es_AR.html

Reading that spec that mdke posted, these are supposed to be hardcoded into the jar files for each of the locales used.

Also from looking at the gutsy virtual machine, I realized it's not just that the home page isn't translated, the entire *application* isn't translated.

The locale files from the different firefox locale packages are still installing their extensions into /usr/lib/firefox, whereas firefox 3 is living in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b5 (or later as more releases come out).

Those "language packs" aren't being used at all.

Not only is the re-packaging of mozilla.org's translations into separate locale and binary packages missing for FF3. The ones in the repos for FF2 have not been updated from 2.0.0.7 and don't work with the current 2.0.0.13. Looks like we're getting close to a release with epiphany as the only gnome-based multilingual browser.

This is not fixed for all languages.

Oddly enough, different languages have different language pack versions in the repositories. Those languages where the issue has been reported as fixed (German and Spanish) have the following version of language-pack-gnome-xx-base available:

  1:8.04+20080325ubuntu1

In the case of my locale (Catalan) and others, the only version available from the repositories is:

  1:8.04+20080325

in which the issue is not fixed (i.e. Firefox is not localised, all menus are in English).

As a side note, gnome-language-selector is still prompting to install the mozilla-firefox-locale-xx and mozilla-firefox-locale-en-gb, although they are not available from 'main' anymore and they seem to only be appropriate for FF 2.0.0.7. But I guess I should report this as a separate bug.

Some locales are inexistent. I've seen in /usr/lib/firefox-addons directory only translation for pt-pt. The directory for firefox-3.0 translations in pt-br is there, but is empty (no translation packages/files at all).

Hm, there's a weird error that shows up when loading a page which doesn't exist (such as http://www.jkljkljkl.com/). I don't know if it's related to this bug, but it seems the translated strings for the error message are not available. This is shown with a red background, instead of a proper error message:

XML-Verarbeitungsfehler: Nicht definierte Entität
Adresse: jar:file:///usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9b5/chrome/toolkit.jar!/content/global/netError.xhtml
Zeile Nr. 59, Spalte 12: <title>&loadError.label;</title>
-----------^

Which means "XML processing error: undefined entity" for the &loadError.label.

Do others see this too?

This seems to be a server-side error. Firefox sends the correct locale headers.

Matthew East (mdke) wrote : Re: Firefox not translated/localized

Daniel - please try http://doc.ubuntu.com/~mdke/ubuntu-docs_8.04.2_all.deb and see if that fixes the Swedish offline startpage. Note that the online startpage will appear if you have a network connection active or have visited it in the past and so have it cached. Clear your cache and open firefox in offline mode to test the offline startpage.

I don't know what the progress of the online startpage is at the moment.

On Hardy, when locale is set to Simplified Chinese, the offline start page for FF comes up to be the Traditional Chinese Taiwan (*_TW.html) instead of the correct Simplified Chinese (*_CN.html) page. Where would I begin to look for where this magic of picking the start page that matches the locale happens as that is wherein perhaps the bug lies?
