Can't switch virtual terminals from laptop to external monitor

Bug Description
With an external Dell monitor connected I am unable to switch the display from the laptop to the external monitor when in a virtual terminal.
In other words, if I boot and then press Ctrl-Alt F1 and then Fn-F8 (CRT/LCD) nothing happens :(
This is with a Dell latitude D410, Hardy Heron.
Note worked fine with Gutsy.

You might try i810switch and i810rotate. I have similar Fn-F8 problems with an Inspiron 1100 laptop. Check out bug #2301443.
