Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Several fixes fedora made to speed up X startup are documented on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/OneSecondX We should make sure Ubuntu includes those that apply to Ubuntu too.

Since those fixes are being pushed upstream, we should get them automatically in Xorg 1.5 or 1.6 as they become available, so I don't think we need a bug for tracking that. If there are other specific fixes you'd like to see included sooner, please point out the specific patches each in a separate bug report and we can take a look (but it's getting pretty late in the release, so only low-risk things are likely to be accepted at this point).

If you are sure the fixes are being pushed upstream, that's perfect and nothing more needs to be done! I don't know if there is anything in the list that can be applied right now, I don't have the technical knowledge for that, but perhaps one of the X maintainers can have a quick look at it?

These two look trivial to me and might be candidates? But perhaps they don't apply to ubuntu, I don't know...:
# Mouse driver no longer sleeps for 0.3 seconds on shutdown for no reason.
# Core server no longer sleeps for 1 second on shutdown for no reason.

Hi Wouter,

I did a quick scan through the fedora 9 xserver rpm and didn't see the shutdown patch, so my guess is that it did in fact make it upstream (ajax is quite good at putting work into upstream). So I'm 99% sure we'll automatically pick up the fixes once we incorporate xserver 1.5 in Intrepid, and can close this bug at that point.

I considered about backports too, but 1.3 seconds off shutdown is probably not going to strike the SRU team as worth the risk. But maybe if the patches were quite trivial... It would help to have pointers to the actual patches.

As per the above, I believe all these fixes were included in the xserver 1.6 rc candidate that we're carrying in Intrepid. Feel free to reopen with additional details if more work remains.
