Bug Description

Hi, I originally sent this as a help request to the ubuntu support mailing-list, but since I haven't received any answer, I'll report it as a bug now:

I've been running Ubuntu gutsy on my laptop for ½ a year now, and would very much like to get Kubuntu on my stationary PC - to begin with as a dual-boot with WinXP.
Now, I've burned the Kubuntu-KDE4-beta iso to a CD, and it boots from the CD alright.

In Konqueror I can in se left panel see different shortcuts (root, home etc.) and also my ntfs Volume. Problem is, when I doubleclick on it, I get an error:
"An error occurred while accessing 'Volume (ntfs)', the system said: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: TODO: have to rethink extra options."

Any idea how I can fix this and access all my Windows data?

I am aware that this is a beta, and it may be buggy - and I also acknowledge that I'm a KDE-noob - what am I doing wrong?

This error occured also to me. I could solve the problem by running "sudo mkdir /media/[something]" and "sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/[something]". I hope this will help you.

Same problem here: The device shows up in the left tab in dolphin and I can do sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/, but clicking on the device gives me the above mentioned error. The device also does not automatically show up in /media.

A workaround which worked for me is:

I actually got it to work this way in KDE. In Dolphin, right-click the media, go to properties -> mounting and uncheck the "mount as user"-checkbox.

This works for me also, using Konqueror as file manager, from the system:/media folder

This thread here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39589 discusses the problem in more detail. Seems to be a problem in hal-storage-mount.c

I can find no such setting. Perhaps related to running with an empty password??

This patch fixes org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure error and enables authentication through kdesu.

Thank you for providing a patch so quickly. Just of interest: isn't there a way to mount the ntfs partition without kdesu?

NTFS partition mounts by NTFS-3G which requires admin privileges.
Unprivileged block device mounts work only if NTFS-3G is compiled with integrated FUSE support.

Sorry for posting here (I'm using OpenSuSE 11 KDE4 4.1RC1) - I'm getting the same error whem mounting external NTFS hard drive. I did all that Eugene wrote before my post AND also ran ntfs-config utility. At this point I've just unchecked write support (!?) and here it is - the external HDD mounts perfectly. It's a mystery!
