Bug Description
Although a similar title exists, problem is different.
Attached message (almost?) consistent when booting 8.04 beta desktop livecd.
Timeout likely : 400 MHZ 128 MB + swap.
(old but excellent Tecra 8000)

Ugly to see in a demo.

Thanks for taking your time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Can you please provide your ~/.xsession-errors from a failed attempt to start the settings daemon as well as the output from "gnome- settings- daemon --debug"? daemon you're using (you can see that by entering "apt-cache policy gnome-settings- daemon" without the quotes in a terminal)
Also, please provide the version of gnome-settings-
