hmm, interesting. i'll bounce this upstream. in the meantime, does starting X
always dump you in such a low resolution? does starting ddcprobe always give
you the right result, or does it give you 'edidfail' half the time? thanks for
the quick followup.

x/lores: yes. It's common (about 25% of distros)
ddcprobe: first and only time I tried. If the problem you suspect is transient, I can try to make it
fail per you directions.

huh, cool. yeah, I suspect the ddcprobe failure will be transient.

Do you thing the failures will present themselves per boot or command issue or disro?

the ddcprobe failures will be per-command-issue, I'm guessing.

ddcprobe doesn't fail, always the same output as above.

It did turn out to be transient. On my last colony 4 boot, it came up at 1024X768.
I installed the new kubuntu preview, and it has brought up X at 1280X1024 (once), 1024X768 (many
times) and 640X480 (many times).

Can you try (as root) the following:
watch -d ddcprobe

for a few minutes and see whether the output changes?
