Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

I have a broken GDM today that runs 100% cpu and won't show a login. Apparently this is related to the facebrowser. I'd like to turn it off via the same GUI systems that I enabled it with. I'm able to log in to the system and GNOME via startx, but when I run gdmsetup, I get an error that GDM is not running and the program exits.

I don't know what problem this "is gdm running" check is intended to solve, but it makes fixing this a PITA.

This is totally a bug in my view. There's no reason to disable the GUI to configure gdm.conf simply because it's not running, and the decision to do so should be revisited. I'd argue this is more "wishlist" than "invalid".

Additionally, I've already dug through gdm.conf to work around the problem. The first paragraph is intended only to highlight the NEED for gdmconf to run without gdm itself running, rather than a request to fix any specific problem with gdm.conf itself.
