[network-admin] doesn't generate working configs for IPW2200 + WEP

Bug Description

The ipw2200 requires the "encryption mode" to be set to "restricted" when WEP is
active, otherwise it won't work. On some cards this is automatic (prism54,
etc.), but not on ipw2200.

It now outputs a line of the form:

wireless-key s:wepkey_here

to get it working for ipw2200, adding "restricted" makes everything work:

wireless-key restricted s:wepkey_here

This also doesn't break prism54 (can't test others: don't have any)

Thanks for your bugreport.

I'm not sure that this change wouldn't break other cards. It would be easy
enough to change, but always setting the mode to "restricted" looks like a risk
to me at this stage of the ubuntu release.

Cheers,
 Michael

fwiw, I've tested this with a prism54, an ipw2200 and an atmel card, and they
all work (on my ASUS AP with WEP on)

I would simply like to see a checkbox in the network-admin window to set
'restricted-mode'.

And, of course, if it would be smart enough to see when I've manually set the
key to restricted in the interfaces file, that would be nice.

Shouldn't the driver be modified so that it enables "restricted" mode by default?

Maybe, but I've seen all sorts of combinations.. apparently it's possible to
have one-way encrypted connections this way (why?!)

i don't understand what you guys are talking about but I have an IPW2200 and
cannot do WEP. I would like this bug fixed. I'd create a bounty if it would help?

restricted vs. open depends on the network you're trying to join, not on the driver or the card. network-admin should probably allow you to change that configuration, but it has nothing to do with IPW2200.

Can someone else confirm my assertion and change the description on this bug please (or mark it a duplicate of some other)?

I own a card with same chipset and it works fine for me with Gutsy and Hardy, may someone else confirm it with the latest one? thanks in advance.

I also have this card and have not been able to reproduce this bug. I will close it now, but if the problem does persist, please re-open by changing the status back to New. Thank you!
