Bug Description

I tried a live Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) in Acer TravelMate 6592G

With Gutsy it doesn't have sound, but with hardy it has.

With Gutsy the screen doesn't get a good resolution (1024x768), but it's usable. But in hardy it gets horrible: inestable (trembling) and with hundreds of small segments of lines (it's similar to the rain). I just replaced the xorg.conf of the hardy life CD with that of the gutsy installation. Now I have sound that I previously didn't, but resolution is still quite poor, but better than nothing.

I attach the gutsy not so good but working xorg.conf (I called it xorg.conf.gutsy) and the bad xorg.conf of hardy beta live CD (xorg.conf.bad_hardy_beta). In the package I also put the Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old that I have for the hardy live CD and for the gutsy installation.

I forgot to comment some things about the hardware:

The graphics card is an ATI mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT

This laptop is one of 6 that were bought by the education authorities and sent to our school recently. They come with Window$ and SuSE preinstalled (I don't like SuSE, so I change the distro to Ubuntu, that I find much easier to use). Getting in the Window$ partition, I see that resolution is 1280x800, and frec. 60 Hz. In SuSe it looked as good as in Window$.

It used vesa on gutsy, now the -ati driver supports the new cards, but something is clearly wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. In the development cycle for Intrepid there have been some vast improvements in the open source ati video driver and we could use your help testing them. Could you please download the latest Alpha CD image of Intrepid and test this particular bug just using the Live CD? You can find the latest image at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Your testing can help make Ubuntu and the open source ati driver even better! Thanks in advance.

I would be very glad to test right now the Intrepid Alpha live CD, but I am on hollidays now and I won't return to work until second half of September. The 6 Acer laptops with those ATI graphics cards are at the school (far from where I am now). Unfortunately I didn't take any one of those laptops with me, so I won't be able to test the live CD on them.

Okay, let us know when you've had a chance to re-test it in September.

Hi Rafael, just checking if you've had a chance to test. Intrepid beta is coming soon, and that would be a good point to check this bug.

Hi, Bryce:

I'm sorry for the delay, but I've been (and still am) very busy these 3 weeks. Today I got some time to check Intrepid alpha 6 in one of the Acer Travelmate 6592G.

Good news: sound is good, and resolution as in Windows (1280 x 800 16:10 and 60Hz).

I've noticed that windows move not accelerated, but I consider this matter a quite small issue.

One of this days, I'll download the Intrepid beta and install it in one of the Acer. I hope I'll have more time to check it more thoroughly.

Great, thanks for confirming the issues are gone; I'll mark it fixed now.

If you run into additional issues after installing Intrepid, please post them as new bugs.
