Bug Description

glxgears now requires the -printfps option to get the old behaviour; however, this does not seem to be documented (there is no man page nor a command-line option to get usage info)

My understanding is that the lack of output is normal. glxgears is not intended
to be a benchmark. Are you having problems with 3D apps which led you to use
this as a test, or is there no other problem but this?

I have some comments: Everyone I know thats using Ubuntu Breezy is having this
problem. When GLXGears is running properly, you get a reading of how many frames
per second (FPS) you are getting. For me, GLX games run very well, but I check
the frames per second to make sure that its running fast before I run a GLX
game, and that tells me if I need to quit some applications if it runs slow. It
worked with Ubuntu Hoary and even the release before that, and it works with
every linux distribution out there, except Breezy.

You can see if direct rendering is enabled using glxinfo -- it outputs a line like:

Direct rendering: Yes

If it is, you can (afaik) assume 3D/OpenGL is accelerated.

glxgears -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark

Use that if you want to use glxgears the old way.

Please document the -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark switch in the man page.

I really miss the feature of glxgears to print the frames per second rate.
Couldn't you make it print the fps by default?

And Until i found this bug report, I even didn't know how to enable the fps output of glxgears.

In Feisty's mesa-utils 6.5.2-3ubuntu1, glxgears seems to be printing the FPS by default...

Correct, it is back to being default, so documentation isn't really needed.. although I'd accept patches to fix that too.

Closing the bug, since glxgears no longer accepts -printfps option, so no need to document that either.
