Actually, this problem is not only about E key - it affects all Euro-related options, including the numeric ones. I'll have to find out why it happens that way...

Hi evancarroll,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

I confirm the bug on Ubuntu 8.10.

Way to reproduce the bug :
1. Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and in the tab "Layouts" add a new layout ( for example Poland.Polish ) so that you have at least two keyboard layouts on the list, for example English and Polish. Note which one of them is the highest on the list.

2. Click "Other Options..."->"Adding the Euro sign to certain keys" and select "Add the Euro sign to the 2 key". Click close.

3. To be able to easily swap between keyboard layouts click on the upper gnome panel and select "Add to Panel..." and add the "Keyboard indicator" item. Now you can select which keyboard layout to use by clicking on the indicator.

4. Open any text editor and having selected the first keyboard layout try to enter the Euro sign by pressing "RightAlt+2". Now change the keyboard layout to the second one and try to do the same. You should be able to enter the Euro sign only with the keyboard layout which was the first one on the list in System->Preferences->Keyboard->Layouts. You can also change the order of layouts in that menu which will cause the Euro sign to be accessible in the other layout. But its always one layout at a time.

I think that the option of adding the Euro sign should work in the same time for all installed keyboard layouts OR that you could separately set it for every layout. Instead, the present situation is that it looks to be general but works only for the first layout.

Ive been testing the bug with USA, Poland, Japan and Germany keyboard layouts.
Im attaching my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Thank you

Just file it upstream, apparently they just sit around on launchpad until someone closes them because [random time value] has passed.

Like the 4 steps would have been to much to see if this bug has been resolved.

Hi Evan,
Sorry, how I can file it upstream ?
Besides, could you explain what you mean by saying "Like the 4 steps would have been to much to see if this bug has been resolved." ?
Thanks

I mean to say that obviously the interest here isn't in fixing the bug, it is in eliminating the complaint.

Launchpad was supposed to be a central proxy into every bug open source bug tracking system to eliminate burden on users. All Ubuntu users, can file a bug in launchpad, and just be done with it. Instead, it frustrates them because bugs sit here idol for a set duration and then they "expire" because of some random time value.

I set up the steps to reproduce the bug, they are just as valid now as they were then. The amount of programmers that use this site are pretty minimal. Upstream, logically, people don't care about this tracker -- it is an attempt to fork the input into the one they're using.

If you want to get the bugs resolved, your best bet it to follow it upstream -- at the source. In this case I would assume freedesktop. Use this tutorial to file the bug upstream:

https://wiki.edubuntu.org/Bugs/Upstream/Freedesktop
