Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I use FF3 b05 under Hardy.

When I start Firefox it seems as fast as the start of FF2, but for the next 5 Minutes its acts on the harddisk so the HDD controller light is just on.
That slows down surfing through the web with the open browser and also slowing down other open programs.

I could identify that FF3 is causing the disk usage by killing FF3 process test.

I can confirm this. Properly because of the disk activity, the CPU is going to 100%, until you close Firefox (takes also a while before it's actually closed). It just started yesterday, out of nothing. I tried everything to find the cause of it:

I'm working in Kubuntu Hardy KDE 3.5.9.

*Started my working profile in safe-mode: same problem
*Copied a backup of my profile from a few weeks ago: same problem
*Started a new profile: no problems (yet)

A few more things I tried:

I uninstalled (purged) firefox--gnome-support and xulrunner-gnome-support
I cleaned the cache, history and such
Restarted X

All had no results. Still at 100% CPU and a constant working hard disk.

One more thing:

There is a bug #221009 , that is maybe related.

Also important is the fact that the problems start also when having only about:blank open and without visiting any website.

Sorry to bother you all again :-)

I noticed a new behavior: When you let Firefox run with the disk activity and the 100% CPU for approx. half an hour. All problems are gone. Disk activity stops and CPU goes back to a normal level. When restarting Firefox, it seems the problems are not coming back, but after 10 min or so, the activity starts again from the beginning. :-(

I confirm the problem. I have the same behaviour with firefox 3 b5 installed on Ubuntu 7.04.
