Bug Description
In the KDE systemsettings GUI, if I select the keyboard layout U.S. English with
a layout variant of alt-intl, nothing happens. It seems like the GUI is just
not running the command "setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us -variant alt-intl"
that it says it will run. If I run that command myself, from a bash window, it
works fine, so it must be something the GUI isn't doing right.

Thak you for your bug report. Do you still have this problem? If so, which version of Kubuntu are you using?
This works fine for me in a recent version of Dapper.
