I get this message constantly (every 30 seconds or so, perhaps when HAL polls
the CD-ROM drive). I don't know whether the drive works reliably though,
because I don't use it (I use a USB drive instead of the internal ATAPI).
Certainly the system does not lock up as a result, though, at least not when not
using the drive

Ok. I'll close the bug report until someone who can reproduce it comes along and
reopens it.

I've been having similiar problems since dapper flight 3. I have to use the "irqpoll" kernel boot option in order to get USB working. However, when I am using that option I get the same "drive appears to be confused" messages when the cd/dvd drive is polled. In my case, first a couple of the message trickle in, then after a few minutes they flood in, freezing my laptop.

When I'm not using the irqpoll option, the drive seems to work find. However, then I won't have USB and I am getting lots of APIC errors etc. see bug #27163

I had to use the irqpoll option sind dapper flight 2 (I did not test df1) in order to get usb working. However, the df kernel did not produce these errors. With breezy, using "noapic nolapic" would also do the job, and in case of using "irqpoll" no problems would appear, either.

I am currently downloading the lates daily dvd and will re-install it in order to provide logs.

I'm getting this error myself while using the irqpoll option on a Breezy kernel 2.6.12-10-386.

I started using the irqpoll option after a BIOS upgrade in which all my BIOS options went back to default. Upon booting up I was hit with another issue, which was a repeating 'drum beat' sound at the gdm login screen. I noticed a lot of irq related issues in the logs, so I fiddled around with pci=routeirq, noapic, nolapic, acpi=off and whatever kernel options I could think of, eventually finding the irqpoll was the only one that would get me to gdm login without getting stuck with this infinitely repeating 'drum beat' noise. Since using irqpoll, I have started noticing this 'hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x01)' error and have had problems with the machine hanging when attempting to read a CD, and various writing issues when burning ISO's.

My hardware is below..

I would add that googling around I have found quite a few threads on this subject which make me wonder whether its a kernel issue version issue, as it seems to be happening with other versions of linux. Not being too experienced with tracking down bugs I'm at a bit of a loss though. :)
