Bug Description
I just installed Ubuntu 5.04 on my Compaq Presario M2000 notebook. It is
dual-boot with
Windows XP. After a problem with the display on install (I had to set vga=771 as an
option), everything appeared to install. Eventually, I ended up at the graphical
login screen (asking for user name and password, and a Session button at the
bottom).
After entering user name and password, I heard the login sound over the
speakers, and then
the Ubuntu splash screen appeared, and then the screen froze. Ctrl-Alt-Del did not
work, and I had to power off. This was repeatable after re-booting.
I then tried to login as a fail-safe terminal. However, I selected session, and then
as soon as I selected any of the other options, the screen froze again. I am
able to
select OK straightaway without selecting any other option without triggering a
crash.
During the previous experiments, I also noticed that after selecting Ubuntu from
the GRUB loader, that the text that was displayed on boot-up (Process1... [OK],
Process2... [OK]) seemed to become slow (or stop) at points, but when I touched the
touch-pad, it would resume disk activity. The last time I tried this (where I
selected
Ubuntu recover mode), doing this gave some error about psmouse.c missing some
bits and
having to be resynched. I was able to log in from the recover mode as root, and
could
not see anything of use in .xsession-errors. On another similar sounding bug,
someone
said their problem was fixed after deleting .ICEauthority from their home directory.
This did not work for me.
From the above, I'm not sure whether there is a Gnome problem or a touchpad driver
problem, or something else.
Does this also happen on the live CD? Can you test a Breezy live CD and see if
it works better?
