xsetwacom can't set parameters

Bug Description

the xsetwacom tool in the package wacom-tools cannot be used to adjust any
parameters of any wacom device. in any attempt to set parameters, the following
error message is displayed:
Error (5): WacomConfigSetRawParam: Unknown X error
Set: Failed to set stylus value for 'Mode'
the bug is still present after today's update to the update to the wacom-tools
package. according to the linuxwacom site the wacom driver should properly work
with Hoary, but it also says that some Debian versions (including Sid) are
unable to run xsetwacom while others are (no reason stated), so this may be a
debian-related problem if wacom-tools is derived directly from Sid. see this
link: http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/index.php/howto/success

i'm using the 7667 version of the official nvidia driver on a toshiba tecra m4
tablet pc with a geforce go6200 graphics adapter, running Breezy development
release with all packages updated to the latest version as of today.

Does this actually result in the command failing, or is it purely cosmetic?

not cosmetic; the command doesn't function at all.

btw, were you able to test the new xsetwacom you uploaded today? it still
doesn't seem to have the Rotate parameter built in.

i reinstalled the package and now Rotate seems to be there, but fails in the way
i describe in this bug:

Error (5): WacomConfigSetRawParam: Unknown X error
Set: Failed to set stylus value for 'Rotate'

and this is the output i get with the verbose option:

Set: sending 105 2 (0x2)
Error (5): WacomConfigSetRawParam: Unknown X error
Set: Failed to set stylus value for 'Rotate'

here's a reply from the driver developer to someone who's having the same problem:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=7308898&forum_id=19621

it seems this happens when xsetwacom and the Wacom driver (wacom_drv.o) are
built from different source versions.

here's the output of "sudo dpkg-reconfigure wacom-tools"

* Doing Wacom setup... [ ok ]
ldconfig: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1.0.7664 is not an ELF file - it has
the wrong magic bytes at the start.

Yes, it works absolutely fine here. I get the error, but stuff rotates anyway.

that's weird because i just noticed that once i get this error, the stylus
totally stops responding.

xsetwacom is still failing in Ubuntu 6.10, with the most recent security updates/bugfixes. My computer is a custom-built AMD Athlon XP 1500+.

wacdump properly identifies my tablet as a Wacom Graphire3 CTE-630, and xsetwacom can find it:

khakionion@metaburrito:~$ xsetwacom list dev
stylus pad
cursor cursor
eraser eraser

But when I try to set a parameter:

khakionion@metaburrito:~$ xsetwacom set stylus mode absolute
X Error: 169 BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device
Error (5): WacomConfigOpenDevice: Failed to open device
Set: Failed to open device 'stylus'

This happens when trying to set any parameter to any of the above-listed devices.
