Bug Description

On Ubuntu 8.04; update manager (version 1:0.87.24) is started on a server from a ssh session; DISPLAY redirected to workstation using xhost based authentication.

There are three packages ready and selected for upgrade. Selecting "install updates" brings up an error box after a few seconds:

Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic '--hide-main-window' '--non-interactive' '--parent-window-id' '48234499' '-o' 'Synaptic::closeZvt=true' '--progress-str' 'Please wait, this can take some time.' '--finish-str' 'Update is complete' '--set-selections-file' '/tmp/tmpDTtiz3' as user root.

Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.

Error message in the terminal:
Error copying '/home/peter/.Xauthority' to '/tmp/libgksu-rrvGQ9': No such file or directory

As the .Xautority file is not needed in a scenario using host based authentication, a missing file should abort the upgrade.

This is also preventing my apport-gtk from reporting crashes.
In my use case, there is no SSh or remote log ins involved.

Are you still affected by this bug? What supported Ubuntu version is affected?
