Bug Description

Binary package hint: seahorse

Since upgrading to Hardy Heron, I ran into problems with the Passphrase dialog when using Enigmail with Thunderbird. It'll plug along fine, not grabbing focus, but accepting input. But then, at some point, I'll hit "send" on a message, the passphrase dialog will come up, and it won't accept input. Even if I click to give it focus, it still won't accept input. Characters don't show in the text box, and typing return won't confirm/close the dialog. Strangely, hitting Escape _will_ close the dialog.

Once this starts happening, it seems to keep happening. Logging out/in, even restarting (IIRC) don't fix the problem. It took me a while to figure out that Enigmail was delegating the passphrase stuff to a gpg-agent, and wrapping thunderbird with a script that unsets GPG_AGENT_INFO did the trick (so that it doesn't call out to seahorse).

Once I experienced the problem and tracked it to seahorse, I also tried gpg directly from the commandline with --use-agent, and see the same symptoms.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

This bug still persist in Jaunty when using Thunderbird + Enigmail + gpg --use-agent.

It can be also experienced when you try to change passphrase of already created PGP key within Seahorse.

Synopsis:
0) Launch Seahorse
1) Right-click on your PGP key -> Properties
2) Change Passphrase
3) Passphrase dialog is displayed, however, keyboard input does not work
4) Click Cancel
5) Another Passphrase dialog is displayed (a different one, something like retry dialog), keyboard input works

Quickfix for Thunderbird + Enigmail

As written by Micah Cowan, you have to launch Thunderbird with GPG_AGENT_INFO variable unset. If it still does not work, uncheck "Never ask for any passphrase" in OpenPGP preferences in Thunderbird.

I'm currently using these three, as unsetting just GPG_AGENT_INFO no longer seems sufficient.

  unset GPG_AGENT_INFO
  unset SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  unset GNOME_KEYRING_SOCKET

(Not all of these necessarily relate to seahorse? I dunno, I just fix what breaks for me. :)

Hello Micah,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with the seahorse package. You made this bug report in 2008 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 231502
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
