Variable-width fonts make I and l hard to distinguish

Bug Description

In the variable width fonts supplied with Debian and Ubuntu it is very hard to distinguish I (uppercase eye) from l (lowercase el). I propose that the uppercase eye have bars along the top and bottom edge in default UI fonts.

I'm not sure this is a fixable bug, as some people like it that way..
I don't remember ever having a problem reading because of this.
This should be posted on brainstorm, let's see what other people think.

Bitstream Vera Sans Mono is included, and it is easy to read:

The Luxi mono just stinks, though. lowercase L and the number 1 both look the same :P

Using Droid Sans as the default font would solve this. :] And it's open-source, so it's fine.

We really should list the problematic characters:
l:I (lower el, upper eye)
O:0 (upper oh, zero)

Any others? When we have a list I will go through some open source fonts and make a recommendation. What else is important in a default font?

What information is missing? I have scanned the previous comments and I do not see a request for information. Quite the opposite, I see complete support of this bug. Please reopen. Thanks.
