Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have the iPod-plugin switched off (it never worked properly for me, I have to use gtkpod). It worked well till now but if I plug my iPod (Shuffle, first generation) on my computer, Rhythmbox pops up and starts to import the music files on my iPod into my library (which doesn't really work but I think thats a problem on my iPod-filesystem). The iPod appears in the left column. I don't want Rhythmbox to interact with my iPod at all. Thanks.

Ok, here is the text-file. I closed Rhythmbox before he finished importing all the files. Hope thats ok.

I can confirm this bug. I have Rhythmbox's Portable Media Player plugin disabled. However, whenever I have Rhythmbox running and then attach my iPod to the computer, Rhythmbox shows that it is attached and shows a progress bar at the bottom showing that it is importing all the songs from the iPod.

Also, if I plug in my iPod, Rhythmbox will start up automatically, even though it is not set in the Preferred Applications control panel (System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications) and then it will show the iPod attached and start trying to import all the files.

This is very annoying as it didn't used to work this way.

I prefer to use gtkpod to manage my iPod, but I like Rhythmbox as a media player and podcast client.

I think this type of behavior is going to really turn people off of the Rhythmbox application if it doesn't get resolved as it doesn't appear to respect their wishes in regard to it.

I also stopped Rhythmbox before it imported all the songs. I hope that is okay.

could somebody having the issue send the bug to bugzilla.gnome.org?

Don't you use Launchpad as bugtracker as well? Why have it then? Why don't just move everything to gnome.org? But I'll do it later.

the ubuntu team uses launchpad as a bug tracker but the team is small and doesn't write all the softwares distributed in ubuntu nor has the ressources to fix all the bugs in those software. the upstream bugs are sent to the upstream bug trackers by the bug triagers but there is lot of bugs and not so many triager, in such cases it's better if somebody who has access to the hardware to trigger the bug and cares about the issue could send it upstream directly, if you don't want to do it that's fine too the bug will wait there until somebody else does that though

I think I found the workaround to this.

1. Open Nautilus
- Places -> Home

2. Then, Edit -> Preferences

3. Choose the Media tab

4. Choose the appropriate action next to the Music Player item in the Media
Handling session. I chose Do Nothing, personally.

No Rythmn box doesn't launch when I connect my iPod.

It will still start importing music if I start it up, even though I have the
iPod plugin disabled, so I am not sure if this is a complete fix, but the
above workaround at least stops it from automatically launching and
importing the files whenever I connect my iPod.

No, thats not the problem, I filed it: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=554708
I just wondered why the program tells me to file it here and not at buzilla.gnome.org. That would be easier and there would be less duplicated bugs, no?

@Jim J:
Thats a workaround for a part of the problem (rhythmbox popping up when plugging the iPod, which is now solved). But if rhythmbox is already running and I'm plugging my iPod, the songs are still imported. We'll continue to discuss at buzilla.gnome.org.

thank you for sending the bug to GNOME, ubuntu encourages its users to report bugs on launchpad because they are using ubuntu and the issue might be due to a distribution change or lack informations to be useful to people writting the software, when the bug is confirmed to not be ubuntu specific it can be sent upstream though

Another problem with the way this is functioning is that if you DO want Rhythmbox to work with your ipod but the plugin is turned off, Rhythmbox appears to read the ipod it but won't let you do anything with it (and it doesn't warn you other than hiding some obscure mime and gstreamer messages in an import errors log). I filed https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600752 about this.
