no sound on Toshiba L40-139

Bug Description

I have a Toshiba satellite L40 139
In Fiesty the sound worked until the volume control was adjusted... I could live with that ..
But after upgrading to Hardy Heron there is no sound whatsoever.

I have followed some suggested procedures and as far as I can tell the sound card is detected..........

But lack of experience prevents me doing further in depth trouble shooting

Hi
I have been to the page listed below and run;
'uname' and 'lspci'
the script ''./alsa-info.sh --no-upload'' would not run it says permission
denied, I tried it using 'sudo' but still no joy.
I ran ;
dpkg -s linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r
but did not understand what it is saying, though it refers to 64 bit
systems... I have wondered whether I should be using a version of Ubuntu for
64 bit!

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

Thankyou for the information..... I have checked the link below
but the link says the following:
'*'Alpha 2 does not include LiveCD images, only images with the Ubuntu
alternate installer. Intrepid LiveCDs will be made available with Alpha 3.''
*

I do not really want to try out the Alpha2 as a full installation,
This laptop was built for Vista and may require a lot of tweaking to get it
running corectly, so how long before Alpa3?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have the exact same laptop and have just tried the 8.10 beta live CD. Again no sound, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which commands I should run to generate the sound logs. Since I am running from the live CD, the wireless doesn't work so I can't send error reports to the alsa website.

Works like a charm.
I own a lap-top Toshiba Satellite L40-13G (Short Model Name: PSL40E).

All I did was:
Add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" had to be added to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base "
=================================================
If you get a "Permission Denied" response when trying to save the file then simply do the following:
1) Open a new shell window
2) Type in
        sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
3) You may (or may not) be prompted for a root/admin password - type it in
4) Go to the bottom of the file and add the following line
        options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
5) Reboot - you should hear sounds...

For those of you with this notebook that have managed to get sound working using the 3stack option? Can you please verify that everything works if possible, i.e speakers, headphone out, line in/mic in/internal mic (if exists), and digital out (if exists)?

There is already some quirk code present in alsa for this notebook, however it does not set the driver to use 3stack. I am a little hesitant to change it without verification that everything audio related works.

Daniel, I'd be interested in your thoughts, as there is already a quirk in sound/pci/hda/patch_analog.c for this notebook.

Sure, let's make the change in jaunty; the corrected quirk seems reasonable.

-SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x1179, 0xff40, "Toshiba", AD1986A_LAPTOP_EAPD),

Well,
You'ld all be glad to know that the above fix (#22, previously used by me), works perfectly well with Ubuntu 9.04.
The only difference is, that now the file is called
alsa-base.conf
instead of the old
alsa-base

Works great!

Well, didn't I speak to soon....

I turns out, that adding the "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" line, doesn't work like a charm.
It only partially works. Indeed, it bring sound to the system, but only one sound and a hell of a lot of trouble.
If you (say, for example) run any audial tab in Firefox (say YouTube) with and other audial program (say Amarok), the one that was started later, will get stuck.
It is only uni-sound. Can't say why.
Suggestions?
