Bug Description

I was running KDE4.1 beta2 reasonably well. I wanted more bling, so I installed xserver-xgl (believing that that would enable desktop effects) and kdeplasmoids (hoping I'd get more widgets). After restarting KDE4, I just got a white screen, so I decided to reinstall kde. I completely removed kde4 (and all kde4 packages) and then reinstalled kubuntu-kde4. Now KDE4 starts up, but gets stuck on the first icon in the splash. The .kde4 directory gets created, but only to a certain point:

Hi Reuben

I'm afraid you probably won't get much help reporting KDE 4.1 bugs on Launchpad--it's still a beta, and the PPA packages are not part of the main Kubuntu release. You might want to try bugs.kde.org.

Whether you need xserver-xgl will depend upon what graphics card you have. I suggest that you try removing that. Have you tried enabling desktop effects without it, in KDE's system settings?

Hi Thomas,

When I reported bugs against 4.0, the commenters suggested that I install 4.1, so I did. Catch 22.

I removed xserver-xgl, and that didn't help.

I can't enable desktop effects - it says that I don't have composite and something else enabled. I have a top of the line nvidia, and nvidia-glx-new binary drivers, so I'm reasonably sure they should work. Ideas?

Tricky one--many of the problems people are having with KDE 4.0 are supposed to be solved in KDE 4.1, so from that point of view you should upgrade to get the latest. On the other hand, KDE 4.1 is still in beta, and is not an official part of Ubuntu (I don't know if 4.1 final will be released for Hardy or not. I hope so, but I doubt it.). As I say, you may be best heading to bugs.kde.org to discuss your problems with KDE 4.1.

If you're interested in testing beta software, then you might want to test the betas of Intrepid when they come out--these will include KDE 4.1 when it's released. Of course, it comes with the usual caveats about being beta software: don't use it unless you're comfortable testing something that may be unstable.

I don't know about the graphics thing, I'm afraid. Linux graphics is rather a minefield. Best suggestion is that you try googling things like "Compositing on " + the model of your graphics card, and see if anyone else has made it work.

Reuben, it is useful to test if bugs you report for KDE 4.0 are fixed in KDE 4.1 since the latter will be in Intrepid and does already fix many problems. I recommend you use project neon kde-nightly packages to do this, as you can install those alongside your KDE 4.0.

For KDE 4.1, although it is now included with Kubuntu Intrepid alphas, for now it would be most effective to report bugs directly to bugs.kde.org. Thank you for testing and reporting your problems!

For your compositing issue, try searching and/or asking on ubuntuforums.org or kubuntuforums.net or the kubuntu-users mailing list for help getting it working. Though FWIW, desktop effects work with nvidia-glx-new without any tweaking on both my systems.

As to this bug, I don't think XGL is a supported configuration and since it's a beta, you may need to remove your .kde4 (back up your old one ;) ) to get it working again. If it starts for you without XGL and with a new .kde4, I think this should be closed.

Resolved in the latest 4.1

BTW, I far prefer posting bugs here since I've had a very negative response posting to bugs.kde.org. Please don't send me there in future, as that'll discourage me from posting. In my view, if kubuntu.org announces a version of KDE in beta, you should take bugs here on that version
