Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.26-2-generic

Unable to start nvidia module and as result unable to use nvidia driver for xorg.

I have all needed packages installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep nvidia
ii nvidia-glx-new 169.12+2.6.24.12-16.34 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new' driver
ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu8 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files
ii nvidia-settings 1.0+20080304-0ubuntu2 Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
$ dpkg -l | grep modules | grep linux
ii linux-restricted-modules-2.6.26-2-generic 2.6.26-2.3 Non-free Linux kernel modules for version 2.6.26 on x86/x86_64
ii linux-restricted-modules-common 2.6.26-2.3 Non-free Linux 2.6.26 modules helper script
ii linux-restricted-modules-generic 2.6.26.2.2 Restricted Linux modules for generic kernels

As I understand current nvidia driver in ubuntu (169.12) doesn't support 2.6.26 kernel. But nvidia released 173.14.09 which support 2.6.26 well.

system:
~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

Confirmed, there is no nvidia module in the package at all, and no mention in the changelog as to why.

Reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/UDS/May2008, this seems intended. They are working on separate packages for nvidia/fglrx. [1]
