Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Using do-release-upgrade to remotely upgrade x86 Ubuntu Feisty desktop install failed.
Attached are the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ and the terminal output.
update-manger/update-manager-core version 1:0.81.3 is installed after the failure, I assume that is the version downloaded to perform the upgrade.

These are the apparent errors in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log, included to facilitate easy location of this bug:
2008-06-28 22:23:05,595 ERROR SystemError from cache.commit(): installArchives() failed
2008-06-28 22:17:41,001 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: '/var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys_1.3.2-1ubuntu7.7_i386.deb': 'subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
'
2008-06-28 22:18:02,098 ERROR SystemError from cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /tmp/tmpD9umBy/backports/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

On a side note, the terminal output shows a bunch of warnings that seem to indicate that do-release-upgrade tries to spawn a graphical dialog box which obviously can't occur without an X display. This is a secondary bug IMO, but not the one this ticket was opened to note. This output also appears in bug #228310

Oops, when pasting the errors into the bug description I put the installArchives() failed message above the others, as indicated by the timestamp.

Rerunning do-release-upgrade ran successfully, the machine was upgraded to Gutsy. It didn't boot, but that is due to other, known bugs.

The error is caused by cupsys failing,

2008-06-28 22:17:41,001 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: '/var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys_1.3.2-1ubuntu7.7_i386.deb': 'subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2008-06-28 22:18:02,098 ERROR SystemError from cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /tmp/tmpD9umBy/backports/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Could you please run:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ sudo apt-get install -f
and attach the output of those commands to this bugreport?

Thanks,
 michael

Thanks for the hint about the running of apport-gtk when the cli mode was used, this is fixed now in bzr.

For the cupsys failure, I reassign to this package.

The problem had been resolved on that machine as noted above by rerunning the upgrader. I was able to reproduce the issue on a (nearly) identical installation. Here is the output of the requested commands directly after the upgrade fails, I had hoped to see a more of a clue as to why the problem occurred:

root@backup2:~# apt-get install -f
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic libslab0 linux-headers-2.6.20-16 libgs-esp8
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 673 not upgraded.
root@backup2:~#

Gutsy is no longer supported, so this issue will not be investigated further and therefore we are closing this bug.
Please upgrade to Hardy or newer and feel free to report any other upgrade issue you experience.
