Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Currently gdm is recommending ubuntu-artwork:

root@portablemario:/# apt-cache depends gdm | grep artwork
 |Recommends: ubuntu-artwork
 |Recommends: edubuntu-artwork

I don't agree that this should be installed by gdm. It's actually already handled by ubuntu-desktop:

root@portablemario:/# apt-cache depends ubuntu-desktop | grep artwork
  Depends: ubuntu-artwork

Derivative distros don't necessarily want ubuntu-artwork installed, and it is pulling in a lot of other packages that they may not want.

thank you for your bug report, gdm recommends the artwork because the gdm configuration is set by default to use the theme which is distributer there and it would display an error if this one was not available, note that you are not forced to install recommends and that the recommends are several alternative for distributions which have an another variant

I understand that it should show a warning, but again, you don't need *ubuntu-artwork*. You need ubuntu-gdm-themes for the recommends.
Having ubuntu-artwork pulls in all of this stuff:

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  gtk2-engines-murrine human-icon-theme human-theme ubuntu-artwork ubuntu-gdm-themes ubuntu-wallpapers
0 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 7573kB of archives.
After this operation, 11.6MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

11 megs is very valuable space for LiveCDs.

note that the ubuntu gtk is being used too and the icon theme should match, not sure if that's worth changing

This effects Ubuntu Studio as well. (I'd also imagine Xubuntu) As this was the behavior before Intrepid I don't see how this would cause and issue if the theme was dropped to suggests as it would only effect people installing GDM from a CLI system. Even then, it just errors and you are returned to a GNOME GDM screen.

Another option would to do something like that which is done for usplash, which Recommends: usplash-theme-ubuntu | usplash-theme (where usplash-theme is a virtual package that can be provided by any complaint usplash-theme)

I like Emmett's suggestion; any derivative providing a theme will very
easily be able to implement this.

After a short discussion on #ubuntu-devel with the artwork teams for each of edubuntu, mythbuntu, ubuntustudio, and xubuntu, it was agreed that gdm should Recommend: ubuntu-gdm-themes | gdm-theme, and that theme providers should Provide: gdm-theme. To facilitate this, I have attached a debdiff for implementation.
