Bug Description

Binary package hint: brasero

Lots of people can't find Brasero disk burning application, because they look for such tool in 'Accessories' submenu,
rather than in 'Sound & Video'? Brasero is multifunctional, and when you want to burn or copy a data (e.g. photos, documents, software) CD/DVD, you don't think of music.

I've done several usability tests - the majority of people, who tried to write their photos, documents (or other data) or tried to duplicate CD/DVD disk firstly looked at "Accessories" submenu.
More than 60% of unexperienced GNOME users didn't find Disk burning application at all - they looked at "Accessories", then at "System Tools" and "Office" menus and didn't find needed tool :(

I'm suggesting to *keep* "Brasero disc Burner" in "sound&video" submenu and *additionally* *add* into "Accessories" submenu - then disk burning software will be easy to find and all people will be happy :)

This can be easy solved by adding added Utility; to the Categories= line of brasero.desktop.in.in file.

There are several bugreports in GNOME bugzilla about this problem, look for example at GNOME-bug #481812 (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481812) or Ubuntu brainstorm idea #6445 http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/6445

comment from upstream:

"Since brasero inclusion in GNOME, things have changed; Brasero now supports all
you describe above but not through desktop files but through other applications
(totem for video, nautilus for data, audio with banshee and hopefully one day
with rhythmbox provided the pending patch is accepted, ...); there are other
applications like gthumb, f-spot, eog maybe that could benefit from an
integration with brasero (I need to work on that during next developement
cycle).
There remain only one desktop file for brasero itself and all more advanced
operations it provides.
So since the plans for the future is to expose more of brasero's features
through other applications (which is more or less the above proposition), I
think this bug has become obsolete.
Thanks for the propositions though. It indeed made sense (and still does) to
"split" brasero's functionalities and expose them differently, not in a single
window. I just don't think more desktop files is the solution.
