Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-96-kernel-source

When installing nvidia-96-kernel-source (via apt-get or "Hardware Drivers" manager), building of the kernel module (nvidia.ko) fails (log attached).

Thanks for taking the time to report the problem.

This bug won't be fixed until NVIDIA fixes bug #251107 because, even if the kernel module could be built it wouldn't be possible to load it because it's not compatible with the new Xorg ABI.

This is fixed for me now in the updated drivers from bug #251107 however I think that better notification to the user when using the hardware drivers manager that the install process failed would be beneficial, and not to modify xorg.conf.

Currently it looks like Nvidia don't plan on adding the support for new releases of X.org to the -71 flavour of their driver, therefore I'm setting this bug report "Won't Fix".

Should Nvidia change their mind, don't hesitate to reopen this bug report.
