Bug Description

Sent an email with two pdf-attachments (first 8.0MB, second 5.6MB) to three
addressees.

One of the names was spellt wrong. So received back a failure notice of the
email-server
of one of the addressees with the original mail attached. Evolution received
this failure
notice and tried to show it in the preview area in the evolution original window
(made no
double click on the email).Trying this, the memory consumption of evolution
exploded.
It took all of available RAM (1GB total in the machine) and began massive swapping
on the disk (another 1.1GB). Evolution can't be used any more because it will not
react to any mouse signals any more. If the evolution process is stopped, every time
it is started again the same problem will occur because the mail that is causing
the troubles is on top of the Input-Box and evolution will try to display it.

Thanks for your bug. What version of evolution/ubuntu do you use? Is that issue
reproducible? What is the process doing that according to top?

The version of evolution is 2.4.1. The version of ubuntu is breezy bager 5.10. The issue is reproducible. Write an email to a non-existing email adress on an existing server for example <email address hidden> . Attach a large Document to that email for example the "Getting Started" pdf manual of Open Office (has about 5.6MB). The server will return a message, that the recipient is not known together with a copy of the sent message in plain text. If this message is activated and opened in the preview window, memory consumption explodes.

Do you have the same issue if you open the mail from the "sent" box?

Hi Sebastien,

no because in the sent box the appendix is still recognized as
an pdf file. Therefore the content of the file is not displayed.

If the email returns from the server because of the wrong name of the
receipient, the content is shown like this:

--=-ul0i+ke1zu35fOEGKAVY
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=0100GS-GettingStarted.pdf
Content-Type: application/pdf; name=0100GS-GettingStarted.pdf
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

When that email is opened in the preview box, the memory consumption
goes up about 500MB. The size of the mail is 7,6MB.

Hope I was abble to help you and thanks for your response,

Joe

Do you have the same issue from the sent box with that mail? That could be an issue from your mail server, when sending a PDF to a wrong email the mail sent back has the pdf as an attachment here and not as some text
