[acpi] System freezes while booting from Kubuntu install CD

Bug Description

After booting from the Kubuntu "Dapper Drake" Flight-2 Install CD (AMD64), the
system freezes. The bootstrapper loads vmlinuz and initrd.gz properly, and the
kernel boots. The last message displayed is "io scheduler cfq registered". The
CD spins down (and is not locked), the HDD shows no activity (not surprising as
it's using a ramdisk), and the console does not echo what is typed (nor responds
to any control sequences, incl. Ctrl-Alt-Del--so it hasn't even loaded init yet).

The CD was burned by cdrecord-2.01 (win32/cygwin) at 16x speed. The process
completed with no errors and a minimum buffer fill of 84% (avg. 98%). The MD5
sum of the image I used matches that of the image on the website. This is,
however, the first time I've used this drive to burn a CD-R (new computer).

This is a notebook computer; the CPU is an "AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology
ML-28", Family 15, Model 36, Stepping 2; there are 896 MB of DDR-SDRAM memory;
the primary (and only) HDD is 60.0 GB in size.

There are two operating systems on the machine, the latter of which is what I'm
intending to replace:
Windows XP Professional (x86) w/ SP2 (across 2 partitions, one NTFS and a FAT16
for the page file)
Slackware 10.2 (x86), using kernel 2.4.31 (across 2 partitions, ext3 root and
swap space)

I have booted KNOPPIX 4.0.2 (again x86, kernel 2.6.1x something) w/o problems.

Passed 'noacpi' option to the kernel and there was no change (problem still
occured). The BIOS setup is VERY basic, and there is no way to disable it there.

Found out that the proper option is 'acpi=off', passed it, then passed both, and
in all cases the system still freezes at the same point. I then got the "Breezy
Badger" Install CD, tried all 4 conditions (none, 'noacpi', 'acpi=off',
'acpi=off noacpi') and got the same results.

I have reason to believe this bug is not solely applicable to Ubuntu, but I fail to see how this bug is not "Critical".

Ubuntu Launchpad uses the severity field differently to some other bug tracking systems. For an (outdated) explanation, please see this document:

Because the bug is still unconfirmed, and no other similar reports have been found, this bug has provisionally been marked as 'normal'.

Thanks

Sorry Sebastien, brain wasn't in gear this morning. I'll change it now I'm awake.

Same for me with Ubuntu Dapper Flight 3 (amd64) and following Hardware:

Fujitsu-Siemens A1655 portable: Turion ML32, Ati Radeon Xpress 200 chipset + graphics card, 1Gb RAM.
Unfortunately I haven't got it now with me. When I get back home I'll try again and note the last message it gives.

I will try the next time I hook my laptop up to a wired port and have the time to download the ISO and run through the process; should only be a couple of days.

Yes. Turned ACPI off and it still occurs. This time, the last message displayed is about my touchpad (something like "Syntaptics PS/2 touchpad at /dev/..."), though I'm quite sure the messages are unrelated to the problem.

I have the same exact problem as the original bug report.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER X800 XL and an asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. Tried the Ubuntu Live i386 and it boots fine. Also tried Fedora 8 Live 64 also boots fine.

Sorry should have also added that I tried the Ubuntu 7.10 and Edubuntu 7.10 both from the Live CD's that I burned. I have burned multiple copies and downloaded it more than once.

I also tried Hardy and the same thing happens. I'm starting to lean towards using Fedora although I would rather use a Debian based system not the Red Hat one. Please help me soon as I want to install in the next week or so. I am willing to try things if I get any new ideas. Otherwise it's Fedora for me.

Try booting with something like nofb noapic noacpi acpi=off nolapic. I don't know witch of the options helped me but it worked.Another suggestion: Buy a mac :)

I can't tell whether you are being cute or condescending. I have been
running Debian since Woody so I know a thing or two about computers. I
am looking for a distribution that I can get my friends into but if it
doesn't work easily on my computer then I can't sell them on it. I also
teach at high school and I want to sell my board on switching to Linux
but if it doesn't install easily then people won't switch.

As for the mac thing that is what I tell my friends now.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Guys,

Intrepid is set to be released tomorrow. It would be great if someone could confirm if this is still an issue with Intrepid or not. Setting the status to Incomplete for now.
