No, It does not work : with version 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 I'v got nothing on
the screen but 100% of the cpu is taken. With the same xorg.conf but
with version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X works

I also have this bug, or something related.
With the 6.9.0 packages, I faced hardware freezes (not even magic key
are available) after a few minutes of use. It looks like that the freeze
is related to redrawing : when I browse my files with rox-filer, and
then change from a populated dir to an almost empty one, rox-filer
resizes the window, and my X freezes. This doesn't cause a freeze if the
resize is not significant. When I surf with firefox and click on my
adblock icon to show the dialog, I also get a freeze.
What is strange though, is that when I open a VNC connection, it doesn't
freeze instantly, despite displaying quite a big window
(1280x1024). However, if I open an application (my RSS reader, say)
within the VNC session, my X freezes instantly.
All the freezes seem to have in common displaying large amounts of white, but
that sounds a bit stupid said like that...
When i downgraded my xserver-xorg to xserver-
only this package, all the not-so-random freezes stopped, and I was able
to finally enjoy my X sessions.
Here's the lspci output (it's a laptop) :

options without a change, both with "ati" and "radeon" drivers, with or
without DRI, EXA, REnderAccel, Composite... I attach it anyway, one
never knows.
I'm running an up-to-date sid on a Centrino laptop, with no exotic
packages related to X.
Please let me know if you need some extra information.
Thanks for taking the time to read and try to understand what could fix
this strange bug.

Hi,
I'm having a similar bug (or maybe the same).
In my case my xorg.conf was generated with X -configure, and was (and is)
working fine with xserver-
apt-get upgrade it did broke xorg.
There are ppl saying that Xorg is using 99% of CPU, but in my case that
didn't happened. In my case Xorg just dies, and the screen keeps blank
(black?).
My transportable graphic board identify itself with vendorId 8086 and
deviceId 24d7, which means ATI Mobility M10 or ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro
or ATI Mobility 9700 (don't ask, I don't remenber which and in true I think I
never did).
I don't think the problem is with the config files as the -configure option
don't work as you can see by the log bellow.
Any other information I can give you just ask.
Thanks you all,

I'm seeing this bug too, with my laptop Radeon Mobility 9600 card.
After the upgrade of xserver-xorg, within a few hours seemingly at
random, the X server crashes and brings down the entire system with it
(including networking). This is a regression from 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11,
which is stable on the same machine, even with everything else at
6.9.0.
I've attached my xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files with
6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 temporarily installed again. I tried commenting out
the 'Load "dri"' line, which didn't get rid of the crashes.

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #345929
I see something which fits some of the other descriptions
for bug #345929:
6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 worked perfect, after upgrade to 6.9.0
my IBM T42p regularly crashes hard (no SysRq, no ping,
the whole thing is just frozen; kernel NMI-watchdog doesn't
kick in, all I can do is power off).
I tried kernels 2.6.14 and 2.6.15 with and without radeonfb,
and I tried to disable acceleration and clock scaling for the
radeon X driver.
Nothing helps.
Sometimes the crash happens already during xdm startup, sometimes
it can take hours for the crash to happen, but usually it crashes
within ten minutes after boot. If I use firefox or gvim the crash
happens sooner than if I just use xterm + vim. If I grab a gvim
window with the mouse and wiggle it around X is likely to crash
within a minute.
I tried using the 6.8.2 radeon driver with 6.9.0 but it seems
the binary formats are incompatible?
For the moment I work around this by using radeonfb + fbdev X driver.

Thanks for the investigation. :-)
I followed the thread and the patch seem to have some regression, so it is
not safe for us to merge it now, unless there are some official commit in the
tree, and I have not found anyone.

Ender.

I've been carefully watching this patch, and I asked benh two days ago if
it was ready to go in, and he said that it definitely wasn't. Once he
thinks it's ready, I'll apply it to our tree.

Can we get this fix in the debian package too?

Is the patch applied to the modular Xorg packages ?
I'm a bit wary about the update because I don't know if I'll be able to
switch back to a usable Xorg system after the modular switch, if the bug
isn't fixed.
Thanks for your time, regards,

I updated to modular X today, and sadly it crashed after
a few minutes (T42p, FireGL Mobility T2).
I don't know how to map the version number of the
xserver-
but if the package is from the X11R7.0 release it
apprarently does not contain the benh memory map fixes.

Hi,
About a year ago, you reported (or replied to) a bug in the Debian BTS
regarding Xorg 6.9 not working with the ATI driver. Did any of you guys
reproduce this problem recently? With Xorg/Etch? With latest
xserver-xorg-core and drivers? If not, I will close this bug in the next
weeks.
Thanks,
Brice

Oh, I had completely forgotten this bug. It has been, for my case, fixed
by reverting to the previous xorg package for about a month or two, and
then one day it was fixed. No problem with my ATI since then.
lspci output, for the record :

I use the "radeon" driver.

Actually, I'm using the Xorg ATI driver successfully with unstable now (forced

No problem with this driver since about X.Org 7.0.
